Ex-AKB48 Star Atsuko Maeda Revives Gravure Career After 14-Year Hiatus

Former first-generation AKB48 idol, Atsuko Maeda, has stepped back into gravure for the first time in fourteen years.

It almost feels like a return to the late 2000s, given the recent wave of gravure comebacks—SDN48’s Serina, Yuka Kosaka, busty actress Megumi Kagurazaka, and Saaya among them.

The trend continues with another notable return: former first-generation AKB48 idol Atsuko Maeda, who has stepped back into gravure for the first time in fourteen years.

Her final photo book, Beste, is scheduled for release in mid-February next year.

A set of preview images unveiled on December 26 tease a bold concept, featuring the former idol’s bare back and curves accentuated by a provocative thong as she reclines on a bed. While the shoot stops short of full nudity, it promises a series of strikingly revealing shots that highlight her figure.

During her time with AKB48, Maeda became the group’s most recognizable figure, fronting numerous advertising campaigns. After leaving the group in 2012, she successfully transitioned into a solo career, establishing herself as a prominent celebrity and a respected actor, particularly through her work in independent films. This phase of her career was marked by Kabukicho Love Hotel, directed by Ryuichi Hiroki, who has since reunited with her for her latest film, No Matter What, I Love You.

In her personal life, Maeda married fellow actor Ryo Katsuji, had a child, and later divorced. Although she has been a constant presence in popular culture for what feels like a lifetime, she is still only 34 years old—a reminder of how early her career began.
